Specialist Green Energy Access Scaffolds

Background

Schlumberger, a leading technology provider for the energy industry, required the installation of a steel pipe riser at their facility in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. The project involved securing access to the building’s exterior for the safe and efficient installation of the riser while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations. The steel pipe riser was built to enable the new vertical bore hole ground source heat pump to connect to the buildings existing boiler room in the roof space.

Challenges

Because the new plant room was built directly in front of the building there was very little room to build the scaffold and nowhere to physically tie the scaffold structure, particularly at the finished height required of 12.5m. We also had the additional challenge of not being able to build off the new plant rooms roof after confirming with Barnwood Construction the load weights of the scaffold on the new flat roof would not be acceptable for them.

Objectives

Design a scaffolding access solution tailored to the building’s unique architectural features incorporating the new plant room. We asked TAD Scaffold design to come up with a solution beaming over the new plant rooms roof and using buttresses rather than physical ties to support the 12m high scaffold structure. We then worked together with Cotswold Energy Groups project team to ensure each section of the pipe riser could be craned into position.

Results

The access solution designed for Schlumberger’s Stonehouse facility demonstrated the importance of innovative scaffolding solutions in complex construction projects. This case study highlights how meticulous planning, compliance, and collaboration can ensure successful outcomes in challenging environments.
