Cotswold Energy Group – The Pulse Leisure Centre
Background
Cotswold Energy asked us to provide a number of scaffolding access solutions for their project at The Pulse Leisure Centre, a prominent health and fitness hub in Dursley, Gloucestershire. The Pulse sought to enhance its sustainability by reducing its carbon footprint and energy costs. The project aimed to integrate solar panels and a large air source heat pump to create an environmentally friendly energy solution.
Challenges
The Pulse is a very busy Leisure Centre operating 7 days a week. We had to be very mindful of all the public using the facility with regards to noise, space, parking and of course health and safety as we were working above and around the building.
The air source heat pump installation was a challenge due to the huge gantry CEG had to build to house it. They needed a large access solution all the way across the back of the building with only one access point from the front which was on foot.
Access was also extremely difficult for the removal of the old Gas Fired CHP unit. It was 2 storeys up at the rear of the building above the changing rooms with no access through the building. We had to come up with a solution to get the old gas fired unit out and move in the new air handling unit which heated the swimming pool. The new air handling unit weighed 1.2 tonne and there was no access for a crane to lift in.
Objectives
Build a Loading Bay and on roof edge protection for the solar PV install on the main buildings roof.
Build an enabling scaffold at the rear of the building between the bank and rear face for the gantry install housing the new air source heat pump.
Build a ramp from the bank at the rear of the building into the old boiler room which would support the dynamic moving load of over 2 tonnes at any one point.
Results
Working together with Cotswold Energies planning and operatives, and TAD scaffold design we achieved all three installs within 3 weeks. The project duration was 5 months and total scaffold contract value £12,000 completed on time, within budget.
The integration of solar panels and air-source heat pumps at The Pulse Leisure Centre demonstrates how innovative energy solutions can deliver substantial environmental and economic benefits. Partnering with Cotswold Energy, the project showcases a scalable model for other community facilities to achieve sustainability goals.
