Project Overview

Enisca, a leading provider of engineering and construction services, were tasked with upgrading key infrastructure at Severn Trent’s water treatment works at Upton-on-Severn, Worcestershire. This project aimed to improve water quality and supply reliability for the surrounding communities. The scope of work included structural modifications, equipment installation, and plant maintenance, necessitating complex scaffolding solutions to ensure safe and efficient access to elevated and confined spaces.

We scaffold down as well as up! Our skilled teams are trained in scaffolding in confined spaces too, which is what our major utilities companies need for scaffolding solutions.

Challenges

Restricted Site Access
The treatment works is an operational facility, requiring minimal disruption to ongoing water treatment activities. Site access was restricted, demanding precise planning for scaffolding material deliveries and erection.

Confined and Elevated Work Areas
The upgrades included work on tanks, filters, and elevated pipework. This required innovative scaffolding designs to safely access tight spaces and heights.

Environmental Sensitivity
As the site is located near the River Severn, strict environmental controls were in place to avoid contamination or ecological disruption.

Safety Considerations
Working at heights, near water, and within operational treatment facilities posed significant risks, requiring adherence to stringent safety protocols.

Objectives

Enisca collaborated with MTS Scaffolding to conduct a thorough site survey. Together with TAD Scaffold design we used traditional tube-and-fitting scaffold and tailored each design to the specific requirements of each tank and work area.

Tanks and Filters
Custom-designed birdcage scaffolds provided internal access for maintenance and installation tasks.

Pipework
Suspended scaffolds were utilized for accessing elevated pipelines with minimal ground footprint.

Logistics
To address restricted access, scaffold components were delivered in phases, coordinated to match the construction schedule. Erection was carried out by a certified scaffolding team following detailed risk assessments and method statements.

Regular Inspections
Ensured compliance with environmental regulations throughout the project.

Safety Measures
Weekly audits were conducted to ensure structural integrity and Scaffolders received site-specific training, including confined-space safety protocols.
