Guardian Self Stoarge – Rolling Temporary Roof System, Cirencester
Background
MTS Scaffolding over the last five years have worked with MSB Steel in numerous projects. It’s been a fantastic working relationship with MSB Steel who are predominantly steel building manufacturers and erectors who offer large scale, turnkey industrial building projects to a wide range of clients. Matthew Stevens who founded MSB Steel called us in April 2023 to ask if we could build a more unusual and specific scaffold.
Challenges
MSB’s client was a self-storage building called Guardian Self Storage, located in Cirencester. Guardian needed to replace a tired old asbestos roof with a new steel frame and metal clad roof. They also wanted to increase the storage within the roof space without increasing the height. MSB had a design in place to achieve what Guardian needed, however, the roof needed to be replaced without the storage facility being closed or relocating any of their clients precious belongings. The only way MSB could think of how this would be achieved was to take off and rebuild the roof in sections, while covering the open sections with a temporary roof from the elements until it was built watertight.
Objectives
MSB asked us whether we could build a temporary roof that was moveable, effectively rolling on and off the areas they were working. This was where the rolling temporary roof system came into play!
MTS started working on how we were going to build he temporary roof system, fixed to a traditional tube and fitting access scaffold. We had several meetings with our scaffold designer, TAD Scaffold Design and with Altrad Generation, Bristol who supplied the temporary roof system called DESSA UNI roof. We understood that the UNI Roof system used a track on either side of either a Mono or Duo-Pitch configuration using a roll out method. This system is usually used to cover the whole roof utilizing a high-capacity aluminium structure and PVC sheeting which offers a wide span and depth. However, to reduce the cost and overall height of the temporary roof, MSB wanted the temporary roof tight to the original roof, only covering the sections as they removed and replaced it.
The method we all agreed on was to build to the surround access scaffold and structure to house the tracking system runway, covering the 45m length of the roof. Then, build a 15m long UNI roof which would be able to roll up and down the runway but still secure tightly and fix in place as needed.
Theres a lot that needed to be considered when building any temporary roof, particularly one that moves! Weights, wind calcs and extreme weather conditions are just a few of the elements that needed to be calculated. The final designs were approved and we got to work building it in May 2023.
Results
As you can see from the images and video (on home page), it was a very impressive scaffold and moving roof! We completed the build within 2 weeks and the overall project duration was just 8 weeks. The scaffold contract value for this project was £30,800.00. Completed on time and within budget.
