Remedial works to Scaffold at Gunns Mill, Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire
Background
Gunns Mill, located in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, is a significant heritage site and one of the earliest surviving charcoal blast furnaces in the UK, dating back to the early 17th century. The building is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, reflecting its historical and architectural importance. Over the years, the structure has suffered from weathering, neglect, and partial collapse, necessitating conservation efforts. A key component of this process was the installation of scaffolding to facilitate stabilization, inspection, and restoration.
Challenges
The scaffolding had been up at Gunns Mill for a number of years by the time they called MTS Scaffolding and unfortunately the protective sheeting has degraded so badly that the plastic was being blown around the neighboring countryside and properties, polluting the area.
Objectives
The Client wanted to find a more environmentally friendly solution, rather than Monarflex sheeting and they wanted to get the scaffolding ready for the next phase of works to the bulding.
The client wanted a netting solution rather than a plastic sheeting solution so we worked with Leach’s in Hereford to provide a coloured debris netting that would withstand the weather conditions for longer.
Results
We inspected the scaffolding and adapted as necessary for the next phase of works, removed all of the Monarflex sheeting and installed Leach’s Superclad debris netting.
